Indian Chess Team Wins Gold at 45th Chess Olympiad: Vidit Gujarathi and Divya Deshmukh Honored
India has made history at the 45th Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest, Hungary, from September 10 to 23, 2024. The Indian chess team achieved a significant milestone by clinching the gold medal. Two prominent players, Vidit Gujarathi and Divya Deshmukh, played vital roles in this success.
In recognition of their stellar performances, the Maharashtra state government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, awarded Vidit and Divya Rs 1 crore each. Their exceptional coaches, Sankalp Gupta and Abhijit Kunte, were also honored with Rs 10 lakh each for their dedication and mentorship. This grand recognition not only celebrates the players’ victory but also highlights the contribution of their mentors to India’s chess success.
Due to prior commitments, Vidit Gujarathi’s father, Dr. Santosh Gujarathi, accepted the award on his behalf. Similarly, Meghna Kunte, wife of Abhijit Kunte, accepted the honor on his behalf. The ceremony was a proud moment for the families as well as the chess community in India.
