Pune, India (August 14, 2024) – In a medical breakthrough, a 45-year-old woman battling H1N1 and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has been given a new lease on life following a successful lung transplant at DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri, Pune. The lifesaving organ was swiftly airlifted from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, to Pune in a meticulously coordinated operation by air India.

The patient’s condition had deteriorated rapidly, necessitating immediate medical intervention. Placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support her failing lungs, she was urgently listed for a lung transplant. A dedicated team of medical professionals at DPU Super Specialty Hospital worked tirelessly to secure a suitable donor organ.

When a potential donor was declared brain-dead on August 11 (as per Indian Express), a specialized team from the Pune hospital was promptly dispatched to Raipur to retrieve the vital organ. The lung was then airlifted to Pune, where the transplantation surgery commenced without delay. The entire process was executed with precision and efficiency, showcasing the hospital’s expertise in organ transplantation.

How lung transplant is done

The diseased lung will be removed and place in secured placed giving the exact temperature and moisture to keep it live. Thus if donor is found, it replaced with the donor lung. The new lung’s blood vessels and airways will be attached surgically. Therefore, for a bilateral sequential transplant, the lungs will be attached one at a time. The incision will be closed with stitches or surgical staples.

This successful lung transplant marks a significant milestone for DPU Super Specialty Hospital, positioning Pune as a burgeoning hub for complex organ transplantation procedures. The hospital’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare is evident in this life-saving achievement.

A Medical Triumph

The successful lung transplant is a testament to the collaborative efforts of medical professionals, including the donor’s family, who made this life-saving decision. It highlights the importance of organ donation and the potential to transform lives.

As Pune continues to advance its healthcare infrastructure, this medical triumph serves as a beacon of hope for patients in need of organ transplantation. DPU Super Specialty Hospital has demonstrated its capability to handle complex procedures and provide exceptional patient care.

This landmark achievement is expected to inspire greater awareness about organ donation and encourage more individuals to register as potential donors. It is a step forward in India’s journey towards becoming a global leader in organ transplantation.
