India has made history at the 45th Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest, Hungary, from September 10 to 23, 2024. The Indian chess team achieved a significant milestone by clinching the gold medal. Two prominent players, Vidit Gujarathi and Divya Deshmukh, played vital roles in this success.

In recognition of their stellar performances, the Maharashtra state government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, awarded Vidit and Divya Rs 1 crore each. Their exceptional coaches, Sankalp Gupta and Abhijit Kunte, were also honored with Rs 10 lakh each for their dedication and mentorship. This grand recognition not only celebrates the players’ victory but also highlights the contribution of their mentors to India’s chess success.

Due to prior commitments, Vidit Gujarathi’s father, Dr. Santosh Gujarathi, accepted the award on his behalf. Similarly, Meghna Kunte, wife of Abhijit Kunte, accepted the honor on his behalf. The ceremony was a proud moment for the families as well as the chess community in India.

The Indian government’s initiative to honor the players and coaches signifies the rising stature of chess in the country, encouraging young talents to pursue the game on an international level. This victory will likely serve as an inspiration to budding chess players nationwide.
